1. School
Every child in Germany is entitled – and obliged – to go to school. Each federal state regulates the structure of its own education system. In Bavaria, all children complete their first four grades at a primary school, where they learn the basics. From the 5th grade, the children move to a secondary school.
- They usually attend this school until the 9th or 10th grade, when they attain a secondary school leaving certificate.
- Children attending a Realschule finish 10th grade with a Realschulabschluss (secondary school leaving certificate). Depending on their qualifications and grades, one option available to teenagers after leaving a Realschule or another secondary school is to go to a technical college (Fachoberschule), where they can attain a subject-specific university entrance qualification in two years.
- Education at a grammar school (Gymnasium) lasts 8 years. Pupils complete their schooling after the 12th grade by taking their final examinations, resulting in a general university entrance qualification (Allgemeine Hochschulreife). This qualification is required to study at a university.

2. Finished school – what now?
When you finish school, you might ask yourself whether to study or do an apprenticeship. As professions are becoming increasingly diverse and job titles are getting more and more complex, you should definitely check out the career guidance at the Agentur für Arbeit.
