Across Germany, there are once again far more vacant training positions than there are people seeking training this year. From October 2024 to May 2025, 375,000 applicants registered with employment agencies and job centres for a training position. Of these, 191,000 young people had neither found a training position nor an alternative in May. However, many companies are continuing to search intensively for trainees in order to secure skilled workers for the future.
There are still particularly good opportunities in sales professions
There are still numerous training positions unfilled, particularly in professions that do not focus on young people. There are almost 42,000 unfilled training positions in sales professions (without specialisation), 19,000 in construction, civil engineering and finishing professions, 16,000 in mechatronics, energy and electrical engineering professions, and around 11,000 each in warehouse logistics professions and professions in food production and sales. There are also many training positions available in metalworking professions, hotel and catering professions (including chefs) and in mechanical engineering and industrial engineering professions.
Almost 40 percent of young people want to learn one of the top ten professions
This academic year, young people are once again particularly interested in training as office management assistants, motor vehicle mechatronics technicians, medical assistants and sales assistants. The Federal Employment Agency encourages people to also consider other professions among the total of 328 traineeship occupations. An individual career guidance consultation can open up completely new opportunities for young people: Career advisors at employment agencies and youth career agencies provide an impartial outlook on future career developments and employment opportunities. They also provide comprehensive information about training opportunities in your place of residence and the surrounding area.
