Register as a jobseeker in good time: make the most of opportunities and avoid a waiting period

If a person’s employment comes to an end, the Federal Employment Agency of Germany will help them find a new job. The sooner those affected get in touch with their Employment Agency, the easier it is to find a new job before their last day at work and avoid becoming unemployed. What’s more, if you register as a jobseeker in good time, you will avoid financial losses.

There are clear deadlines for registering as a jobseeker. Failure to comply with these rules may result in a suspension of unemployment benefit payments. If it has been clear for some time that the employment is due to end, notice must be given at least three months in advance. Anyone who only finds out at a later date that an apprenticeship or off-site training placement is coming to an end must register with the Employment Agency within three days of becoming aware of this. The report can be made online, by telephone or in person.

If a jobseeker fails to register or registers late, the Employment Agency imposes a one-week suspension period. During the suspension period, entitlement to financial benefits is suspended.

In 2025, the Employment Agencies imposed around 792,000 suspension periods under the unemployment insurance scheme (SGB III). Of this total, 41.2 per cent – or around 326,600 suspension periods – were attributable to late registration as jobseekers. As a result, those affected have lost part of their entitlement to unemployment benefit. Compared with 2024, the number of suspension periods due to late jobseeker registrations has fallen by 2.9 per cent, or around 9,800.
