Undergoing vocational training in Germany

In Germany, vocational training is a means to learn a profession from scratch. Find out whether vocational training is right for you and what the necessary steps are.

What is vocational training?

In Germany, you learn some professions through a vocational training programme. Vocational training is precisely regulated and lasts several years. Practice and theory alternate in a vocational training programme. Therefore, vocational training is also called "dual training" in Germany.

Structure

The practical parts take place in a company. This is the "training company". This is where you learn the practical skills required for the profession.

The theoretical parts take place in a specialised school. This is the "vocational school". This is where the necessary specialised knowledge is taught.

A vocational training programme in Germany begins at fixed times in autumn or spring. The exact date depends on the profession and region. Find out in good time what applies to the vocational training programme you are interested in.

Duration and payment

The duration of a vocational training programme depends on the profession. It can last between 2 and 3.5 years. The programme ends with a final examination.

While undergoing vocational training, you receive a payment from the training company, the training allowance. This increases over the duration of the training. The amount depends on the profession in question.

Wichtig:Important: In Germany, it is mainly young people who undergo vocational training after leaving school.
