Stellenbeschreibung
About the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut
We are a senior federal authority responsible for vaccines and biomedicines that performs scientific research in the field of life sciences. Our institute networks with national and international players which makes it a competent partner for the general public, science, medicine, politics, and economics.
The research group "Host–Pathogen Interactions"...
investigates how viruses interact with the innate immune system. We aim to discover and characterize novel factors at the interface of viral sensing and neurodevelopment or neurodegeneration (selected publications: https://doi.org/10.3390/v16081340;10.1016/j.molcel.2022.06.010; 1128/mbio.02252-23). To map molecular mechanisms, we combine CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing with proximity-labeling mass spectrometry to define the local protein environment of key host factors. In addition, we use induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)–based models to study cellular mechanisms relevant to disease.
We offer a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment fostering collaboration and innovation as well as secure funding that enables scientific flexibility and independent exploration. In addition close supervision and structured mentoring to support your academic development are essential for us. Last but not least, we offer state-of-the-art technologies and access to advanced high-throughput platforms, along with integration into an international research network with strong opportunities for collaboration and visibility.
Your Key responsibilities
- The PhD student will work on an ambitious project at the forefront of current research
- The student will validate newly identified interaction partners of PQBP1 and investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of this protein complex
- In addition, the student will develop and apply a novel mass spectrometry–based strategy to resolve the temporal and spatial proteome of HIV-1 sensing
- The project integrates omics approaches with advanced cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemical characterization of protein–protein interactions, as well as viral infection experiments (BSL-3**, including HIV)
- The work will involve CRISPR-engineered cell systems and primary cells to assess functional consequences for innate immune responses
- The PhD student will be embedded in an active international collaboration network, with scientific exchange and joint work with partners in Switzerland, France, the USA, and within Germany
Our criteria for applying
- A graduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the life sciences or a related discipline
- Passion about infectious diseases, innate immune mechanisms, and neurobiological aspects of host–pathogen interactions
- Curiosity and motivation to develop own research ideas and to implement new techniques
- A high level of dedication, reliability, and productivity in day-to-day research
- Independence and initiative in experimental work
- Strong communicative competence, both intellectually and interpersonally
- Excellent communication skills in English
- Contributing to a collaborative lab culture and teamwork
- Hands-on experience in cell culture
- Experience in infection biology, CRISPR/Cas or protein-biochemistry is a plus
Our offer
A stable, multifaceted, and challenging position centrally located in the Rhine-Main area (Frankfurt) with good public transport connections (motorways/highways, airport, and fast commuter train). Being an employer in the German public service, we offer the usual social benefits such as annual payment supplement, employer’s pension scheme, and special contributions to a particular statutory savings scheme (Vermögenswirksame Leistungen).
The successful candidate will be employed on an initial 3-year fixed term contract. Part-time working is possible in principle. The payband is E 13 TVöD (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst, Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Public Service), Part I of Annex 1 of TVEntgO Bund (Tarifvertrag über die Entgeltordnung des Bundes, Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Pay System of the Federal German Public Service) and the position is 50% financed. The assignment to a payband is made based on the consideration of your individual professional experience. Disabled candidates will be given preference if their skills and qualifications are equivalent to those of non-disabled candidates. The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut encourages gender equality and life-work balance, especially in respect to the family. For this purpose, we have various employment models to offer including flexible working hours (different forms of part-time work, no core time), hybrid working (max. 60% remote), child care facilities, internal and external communication platforms, and various opportunities for further professional training. Our occupational health management policies and Jobticket (subsidized commuter ticket) round off the offer. For more information, please visit our website.
