Stellenbeschreibung

The German Primate Center (DPZ) - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen conducts basic research in primate biology, molecular biomedicine and neuroscience. It maintains four field stations and is a competence and reference center for research on and with primates. The DPZ is one of the 96 research and infrastructure facilities of the Leibniz Association.

The Sensorimotor Group (SMG) of the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory (CNL) jointly with the Primate Data Science (PRIDAS) platform are seeking to fill a position for a

PhD candidate in Computer Vision (m/f/d).

with a 3-year fixed-term contract, paid according to the German tariff TV-L (E13 with 65 %).

The SMG investigates how information is processed in the central nervous system. We have a particular interest in decision making and action planning. We developed unique experimental settings instrumentalized with 18 cameras to record the behavior of rhesus monkeys while also monitoring their brain activity. The PRIDAS platform supports the research at the DPZ with expertise in the areas of data science, scientific computing, and deep learning. For the SMG the platform provides expertise in computer vision.

The SMG group and PRIDAS platform are looking for a PhD student who will develop, evaluate, and deploy state of the art computer vision models related to primate identification and interpretation of their behavior. Additional responsibilities involve the development of associated tools to enable the real-time analyses, collection, storage, and management of related video data. To those ends the student will work in close cooperation with research groups at the DPZ and the Göttingen Campus. A structured PhD program will offer many opportunities for the development of scientific and personal skills.

Candidates ideally combine several of the following skills and qualifications:

  • A very good M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, physics, machine learning or a similar field
  • A strong background in computer vision, deep learning, or a related data intensive discipline
  • Knowledge of at least one deep learning framework (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch) as well as a programming language (e.g. Python)
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team
  • Very good English skills (written and spoken)
  • High motivation to collaborate across scientific disciplines

We provide the opportunity to be directly involved in multiple research projects. Within those you'll expand your skills in an attractive scientific environment with a modern IT infrastructure. The DPZ provides flexible and family-friendly working hours, as well as sustainable mobility benefits.

We adhere to the Leibniz diversity standards and welcome applications from all qualified persons, regardless of their ethnic, cultural, social background, gender, religion, ideology, disability, age, or sexual identity. Disabled applicants with equal aptitude and qualifications will be given preferential consideration if the disability is indicated in the application.

The position is full-time and to be filled as soon as possible. For informal inquiries, please contact Christian Weber at cweber(at)dpz.eu.
Please send your written application by 31.07.2026 under the keyword "PRIDAS – computer vision PhD" with a CV, motivation letter, and list of references via E-Mail to bewerbung(at)dpz.eu.
