The Leibniz Institute of Neurobiology (LIN) Magdeburg is a non-university research institution that investigates the neurobiological mechanisms of learning and memory. With a broad spectrum of molecular biological, animal and human experimental research and the corresponding research infrastructure, the LIN forms one of the cornerstones of neuroscientific research in Magdeburg and the Leibniz Association. With 250 employees, we work nationally and internationally with universities, research institutions and companies.
We are looking for a
Head of Research Infrastructure (m/f/d)
The position includes the strategic and operational management of research infrastructure (a ‘Core Unit’) at the LIN. The aim is to further expand high-performance, networked core units, with an objective to strengthen their visibility and use in a national and international context. The position combines science-related infrastructure development with strategic management and offers considerable creative freedom in the expansion of forward-looking research platforms. The position is part of the newly created research infrastructure area "Combinatorial NeuroComputing" – (NeuroCom).
The field of responsibility includes in particular:
- Further establishment and strategic expansion of the transcriptomics-focused Quantitative Genomics Core Unit – currently under development with secured funding – in close collaboration with behavioural quantification, research data management and technology development units (including enhancement of strategic transfer potential).
- Development of transcriptomics-based biomedical translation approaches, supported by additional third-party funding acquisition, within this core unit.
- Advising the management and the research group leaders on scientific, strategic, and operational issues of the relevant research infrastructures as well as on their further development.
- Coordination and strategic development alongside existing core units in the field of imaging procedures and methods (microscopy, 2-photon imaging, small animal imaging, EEG, human imaging).
- Development and implementation of institute-wide standards for user-based research infrastructures,
- Representation of the Core Unit on strategic management boards as well as participation in strengthening strategic Research Program aims and collaborative projects within the LIN.
- Cooperation and networking with external research institutions, organisations and initiatives (in particular the Leibniz Association, NFDI, and other strategic international networking).
- Participation in science communication and public engagement events.
You bring with you:
- Doctorate and completed scientific university degree (Master's, Diplom or equivalent) in life sciences.
- Proven knowledge and professional experience in the field of research infrastructure management, including extensive experience developing, establishing, and leading advanced genomics initiatives in relation to core facilities. Experience translating discoveries into impactful clinical applications and paths to commercialization (experience with start-ups or other transfer potential initiatives).
- Experience in leading teams and facilitating collaborative group dynamics. Including onboarding, managing multidisciplinary teams, and mentoring researchers.
- Very good knowledge of English (~C1) and basic knowledge of German (~B1), both written and spoken.
- High degree of responsibility, motivation as well as an independent, solution-oriented ways of working. Including evidence of research output related to impactful scientific publications and/or patents.
- Evidence of securing third-party funding and related grants for technology development.
- Strong teamwork, organizational, and communication skills. Evidence of supporting science communication and public outreach. Additional experience running transcriptomics-related workshops and training programs.
