The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is, with its holistic approach to sustainability, its unique range of courses geared towards future-oriented topics and its strong institutional commitment to the field of sustainability research, a driving force for sustainable development. Around 2,300 students from about 60 nations study and more than 400 employees teach, research and work at the modern university. The mission of the HNEE is to lead the transformation towards a sustainable society by developing viable model solutions and equipping students with the necessary skills to shape the future.

For the BMFTR-funded project “BÖLT Meer” we are looking to fill the following positions as soon as possible:

Postdoctoral researcher (d/f/m)

The position is limited until 31 January 2029

Payment is according to the qualification up to salary group E-13 according to TV-L (50 %)

The BMFTR project “BÖLT Meer” is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the project, “Biodiversity, economy, livelihoods, and traditions in the South China Sea: toward a transdisciplinary research strategy”. The postdoctoral researcher will co-implement the project in bringing together a group of researchers who can influence Asian studies teaching and policymaking in Germany and the European Union. BÖLT Meer is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and the advertised position is expected to be based at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. The postdoctoral researcher will be assisted by two student assistants in fulfilling project tasks, including data management and science communication.

Your tasks
  • independently contribute to the objectives of BÖLT Meer including developing an ecological and socio-economic research strategy for the South China Sea or West Philippine Sea (SCS/WPS); analysing social-ecological trends on the blue economy of claimant countries and conducting foresight analysis on natural resource management in the region
  • publish results in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or present the results in conferences
  • closely cooperate with the project team for data management and science communication

The position requires travels within Germany, the European Union, and Southeast Asia.

Requirements
  • an excellent interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary background (Ph.D. in Asian Studies, environmental economics, marine social and cultural studies, human geography, sustainability studies, or similar)
  • experience in writing scholarly journal articles
  • in-depth knowledge of the interface between science and policy
  • knowledge of qualitative research methods
  • experience in engaging stakeholders
  • very good written and spoken English skills (at least equivalent to level C1 according to the CEFR) are essential

In addition, you identify with the university’s commitment to sustainability and contribute to a non-discriminatory and inclusive university culture.

Desiberale
  • good German skills (at least B2 level)
  • a very good knowledge of Southeast Asian languages (e. g. Bahasa Indonesia, Filipino, Vietnamese or similar)
  • education or work experience in management of international research projects
  • intercultural experience working with policymakers especially in Germany and Southeast Asia
  • good knowledge of environmental statistics and/or geographic information systems
