Stellenbeschreibung

Through the German Federal ex situ Genebank for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops, IPK operates the largest genebank in the European Union and one of the largest in the world, providing plant genetic resources (PGR) to researchers and breeders. The most comprehensive information possible forms the basis for PGR users to select and access the material required for their scientific and breeding activities. For this reason, IPK has been working for some time to transform the genebank into a bio-digital resource centre.

As part of the TWIN project, funded by BMFTR, plans are in place to develop a digital discovery platform for cereal genetic resources. This involves upgrading existing databases and information systems to ensure they comply with FAIR principles and can communicate with one another via APIs, and, on this basis, developing a shared search portal.

To strengthen our team of the research group Genebank Documentation, we are looking for an experienced software developer to join us from 1 September 2026 to help drive these activities forward.

Your tasks:

  • Transformation and curation of the collected project data
  • Data integration using existing information systems and established workflows
  • Development of interface specifications and implementation of APIs
  • Development of an integrated search platform based on APIs
  • Close collaboration with the other bioinformatics groups at IPK

Your qualifications and skills:

  • You hold a master’s degree in the field of computer science, ideally with a specialisation in software development, or an equivalent qualification.
  • You have relevant professional experience in the area of genebank documentation and data integration.
  • You are familiar with the development of web-based applications using the Oracle Application Express (APEX) framework.
  • You are familiar with common data standards in the area of PGR, such as MCPD and MIAPPE.
  • You are familiar with the FAIR principles and the Breeding API (BrAPI) specification.
  • You have a very good command of written and spoken English.

You fit to us:

  • if you have extensive experience in software development.
  • if you have technical understanding and logical thinking skills.
  • if you are a team player, determined and open to new challenges.
  • if you are precise and reliable.
  • if responsible and independent work is a matter of course for you.

We offer you:

  • an international, interdisciplinary working environment at the interface between life sciences and computer science.
  • the possibility to work on a large project in a friendly and familiar atmosphere.
  • a full-time position limited until 31 March 2029 according to §2 WissZeitVG.
  • a salary in accordance with the German TV-L pay scale up to pay group E13.

If you need further information, feel free to contact Dr. Stephan Weise (tel.: +49 39482 5-744) directly.

What you need to know:

For us, your qualifications and strengths count. Therefore, everyone is welcome – independent of gender, origin, age, or disability. The IPK is striving to increase the proportion of women in sectors where they are underrepresented and, therefore, explicitly encourages qualified women to apply. Our institute has been certified for Career and Family (“berufundfamilie”), and we offer family-friendly working conditions and flexible working hours. The IPK has set a goal to employ more people with disabilities. Qualified applicants with a disability will be given preference.

Your application:

We look forward to receiving your complete application (letter of motivation, CV, certificates) as a single PDF document until 24.07.2026 via online-application (https://www.ipk-gatersleben.de/en/career/job-offers/). If you have questions or require more information, please contact Kerstin Schweigert (jobs@ipk-gatersleben.de). Please indicate the reference number 30/06/26 in your correspondence. Please note that incomplete application documents cannot be considered. Foreign qualifications must carry out an equivalence test in Germany, which is subject to a fee. This must be presented in the event of later hiring: https://zab.kmk.org/en/statement-comparability
