Stellenbeschreibung

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology is an internationally oriented institution whose research focuses on the principles, mechanisms and effects of evolutionary change. It is home to the Department of Theoretical Biology and the Department of Microbial Population Biology, and several independent research groups. The institute is located in Plön, a town in a beautiful lake area in Northern Germany, about an hour north of Hamburg. We offer state-of-the-art facilities and an interdisciplinary and international environment driven by scientific curiosity. The working language at the institute is English.

The Department of Theoretical Biology at the institute is looking to recruit a

Group Leader in Theoretical Biology (m/f/d)

to strengthen and complement the research done within the department. We use

mathematics and computational methods to study biological processes. For more information visit theobio.evolbio.mpg.de.

We are looking for someone with a PhD and first postdoctoral experience in theoretical biology, applied mathematics, theoretical physics, or a related area, and a strong research record supported by peer-reviewed publications. In addition, we ask for excellent analytical and computational skills, and a strong interest in working at the interface between evolutionary biology and theoretical biology.

The fixed term position is offered at the E15 TVöD-Bund level for up to six years (according to your personal status in WissZeitVG https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/wisszeitvg/__2.html). Group leaders are envisioned to develop and pursue their own, independent research program. The position comes with core funding for their group and funding for a PhD candidate.

To apply please submit

  • a motivation letter including a statement of research interests and how they complement the existing research areas of the department
  • a CV
  • contact information for two references up to three selected publications

in a single pdf file to bewerbung@evolbio.mpg.de. To receive full consideration please apply before 1.9.2026. Questions regarding the position can be directed to Arne Traulsen (traulsen@evolbio.mpg.de) or Michael Sieber (sieber@evolbio.mpg.de).
