PhD position 75% within a third party funding project

The Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics IV, in particular Plasma Astroparticle Physics, works at the interface of plasma and particle physics. The Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics IV has a vacancy for a PhD position (m/f/x).

As a research assistant (m/f/x), you will work at Theoretical Physics IV in the context of a BMFTR-funded project. The general goal of the project is to develop and refine a mathematical model for Newtonian noise, enabling a deeper understanding and effective compensation of this noise in gravitational wave detectors, with direct implications for site selection and noise mitigation strategies for the Einstein Telescope. There is the possibility of doing a PhD as part of the project.

Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 Jahre
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2026-08-24

Your tasks:

  • Analytical calculations of Newtonian noise
  • Compararison with numerical simulations
  • Appling the developed methods and models to smaller test systems
  • Implementation and testing the calculations in the ET Pathfinder facility in Maastricht, Netherlands
  • Document and present research findings on (inter)national conferences

Your profile:

  • very good Master's degree in Physics
  • previous experience on the master's level in the above-mentioned topics
  • strong interest in contributing in the Einstein Telescope project
