Development Lead for the Helmholtz Cloud portal
Limited: 2 years | Starting date: 01.10.2026 | ID: FHMA020/2026 | Deadline: 02.09.2026 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible
DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
In that capacity, DESY is member of the German Helmholtz Research Association, a group of 19 independent research centers all over Germany, providing a world-class science infrastructure, focusing on the major societal challenges of our time, covering areas like climate change, energy transition, transport in the future and the battle against severe and widespread diseases. In order to most efficiently use its distributed IT resources and expertise and at the same time reduce the energy footprint, the Association is operating the Helmholtz Federated Services, in short, HIFIS. The platform provides a seamless and powerful ICT infrastructure to the entire Helmholtz scientific community. Within HIFIS, DESY is responsible for the implementation of the central Cloud Portal, making firstclass distributed cloud services available and easily accessible to the 42 000 employees of all Helmholtz centres and, whenever possible, to external scientific collaboration partners.
About your role:
As a Scientist, you take the responsibility to lead the implementation and functional development of a Helmholtz-wide Cloud Portal.
- You will lead the implementation and further functional development of the novel Helmholtz-wide Cloud Portal, providing access to distributed compute data and other cloud services to all Helmholtz centres, their scientists and collaboration partners
- You will lead a small, geographically distributed team of developers to implement and further improve the portal
- You will lead the evaluation and definition of necessary technical interfaces, in the areas of AAI, monitoring/accounting and resource management, to seamlessly integrate all cloud service offerings into the portal and make all services easily accessible
- You will be the contact of your team to other HIFIS groups and to groups outside of HIFIS, working on similar endeavors
About you:
- You own a university degree in computer science, physics, mathematics or equivalent
- You have a good knowledge in distributed cloud services and federated core services, like portals and single sign-on authentication
- You have basic knowledge in the areas of Cloud Management Frameworks, distributed Data Management, Authentication and identity Management
- You are able to translate technical designs into comprehensible visions and successfully communicate those visions to your coworkers and stakeholders
- You have a good spoken and written command of the English language
- You are motivated by leading geographically distributed teams and ideally already have experience with this
- The successful candidate should be willing to undertake occasional business travel within Germany
Good reasons to join:
