PhD position (m/f/x): Data analysis for exotic hadrons at hadronic thresholds
The work of the chair of experimental physics 1 focuses on basic research: One of the most essential elements of todays education and research is to gain a better understanding of the structure of matter and the fundamental principles of nature. In this process the basic research of physics plays an important role as it provides a base for technical innovations and development. Hadron Physics deals with strong interacting particles consisting of quarks and gluons. Among those hadrons also rank the building blocks of the atomic nucleus, the proton and the neutron. There are many other hadrons that can only be created via collisions of high energetic particles in big particle accelerators. The created hadrons are detected by modern and complex detectors to examine their composition and interactions.
The position is embedded in two research programs. DEMOS ("Democratizing Models") is an ErUM research initiative developing a federated, interoperable standard for describing, sharing and re-evaluating physics models across particle, hadron, nuclear, neutrino and astroparticle physics. Hadronic coupled-channel amplitudes are one of its flagship applications: they are analytically intricate and rarely reproducible from the publication alone, which makes them an ideal test case for the new standard. HADRON 2030 is an intercollaborative research network dedicated to studies of hadron physics. Within the ExHAT (Exploration of Heavy Hadrons at Thresholds) project, we will explore heavy hadrons at thresholds using spectroscopy methods with LHCb data and inclusive production studies with ALICE. The flagship case is the doubly charmed tetraquark Tcc(3875)+, which lies a fraction of an MeV below the D0 D*+ threshold. Line shape, pole position, three-body DD-pi dynamics and isospin breaking have to be disentangled in a joint effort of theory and experiment.
Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 years
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2026-10-06
Your tasks:
- Application of advanced methods of data selection, efficiency and resolution
studies within LHCb data analysis. - Construction, fitting and analytic continuation of coupled-channel scattering
amplitudes. - Decipherment and serialization of the complex amplitudes in the DEMOS /
amplitude-serialization format. - Collaboration within the DEMOS / HADRON 2030 networks.
Exchange with the experimental collaborations
[LHCb, BESIII, Belle II, GlueX, ...] and with EFT/lattice QCD groups.
Your profile:
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, completed by the starting date.
- Background in experimental particle physics or hadron physics, and familiarity
with quantum field theory and scattering theory.
- Good scientific programming skills (Julia, Python or C++) and experience with
version control and reproducible workflows.
- Very good command of written and spoken English.
- Interest in working at the interface between theory and experiment and in open,
reusable research software.
