What to Expect
The Test Engineering (Germany) team drives the development and delivery of world-class test solutions that accelerate product development and deepen engineering understanding across Tesla's vehicle programs. By leveraging Tesla's technology and engineering culture, the team builds efficient, flexible, and highly capable test infrastructure that directly influences the quality and pace of next-generation EV development. As a Test Equipment Engineer within the Germany division, you will be a critical contributor to test equipment design, build, and operation efforts spanning high voltage distribution, battery systems, structural and vibration validation, drive units, and drive inverters. This is a hands-on design role — you will own test solutions from concept through commissioning, working closely with validation engineers, technicians, and Tesla counterparts to ensure that the right equipment is in place to support program milestones.
What You’ll Do
- End-to-End Design: Lead the mechanical and electro-mechanical design (3D CAD, schematics, FEA) of test rigs, dynamometers, shaker fixtures, and HV distribution panels for battery, drive unit, and structural validation.
- Instrumentation & Integration: Specify and integrate sensors, actuators, and measurement equipment, collaborating with controls engineers to ensure seamless DAQ integration and CE/IEC/VDE safety compliance.
- Project Management: Own test equipment projects from concept through commissioning—managing vendors, scopes, and aggressive timelines while tracking deliverables via Jira/Confluence.
- Hands-On Commissioning: Drive the physical assembly, installation, and validation of test equipment on the shop floor, performing root-cause analysis on hardware issues.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with validation engineers, technicians, and global TSE teams to translate test objectives into robust, efficient equipment requirements and author comprehensive build documentation (BOMs, MIs).
What You’ll Bring
- Education & Experience: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field, with 3+ years of hands-on experience designing electro-mechanical test systems or industrial machinery. EV powertrain or HV experience is strongly preferred.
- Mechanical Engineering Core: Proficiency in 3D CAD (CATIA V5 preferred), GD&T, structural/fatigue analysis (FEA), and diverse manufacturing processes (machining, weldments, sheet metal). Experience with rotating systems and rotor dynamics is a major plus.
- Test Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge in at least one of the following areas:
High Voltage / Battery: HV circuit design, safety interlocks, thermal conditioning, or pack-level fixtures.
Structural / Vibration: Shaker table fixtures, accelerometer instrumentation, and shock profiles (IEC/MIL-STD).
Drive Unit / Inverter: Dynamometer integration, torque measurement, and EOL test hardware. - Electrical & DAQ: Solid understanding of high-voltage safety principles, measurement instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power analyzers), automotive protocols (CAN/LIN), and test automation frameworks (LabVIEW, Python).
- Soft Skills & Culture: Exceptional hands-on aptitude, strong project management skills, and the ability to self-direct in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment. Fluent English required; German language skills are a strong advantage.
