Our research group consists of a combination of scientists and practicing cardiologists, which facilitates the integration of basic and clinical research. This project focuses on the impact of systemic diseases on oral and maxillofacial health. In particular, it is known that conditions such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes can impair periodontal remodeling and promote the progression of degenerative processes. However, the underlying mechanisms and the effects on the upper and lower jaws are not yet fully understood. Changes in the periodontium and alveolar bone can lead to bone loss, root resorption, and ultimately tooth loss. A particular focus is on the relationship between heart failure and inflammatory periodontal diseases, as there is evidence of a shared pro-inflammatory mechanism. The goal is to better understand the molecular basis of these interactions in order to develop innovative therapeutic approaches and to sustainably improve the effectiveness of dental and orthodontic treatments for affected patients.
