Stellenbeschreibung

DevOps Engineer for Identity and Access Management

Are you excited about building robust and secure federations, monitoring and improving, and collaborating across teams to drive continuous innovation?

Then you’ve come to the right place! At the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), we operate some of Europe’s most powerful computing systems and provide them to science and engineering communities in Germany and across Europe. We're looking for a passionate DevOps Engineer in Identity and Access Management who is not only a problem solver but a catalyst for change and evolution. We envision a candidate who loves scripting, orchestration using distributed cloud services and can integrate seamlessly into our dynamic and collaborative work environment. Join us on a mission to operate Helmholtz ID and provide a compelling user experience.

We have created the Helmholtz ID service in 2018, in order to provide the Helmholtz Association with a central identity and access management service. It has been steadily growing in usage. We are working on scaling Helmholtz ID to attend thousands of simultaneous users.

Your Job

As a DevOps Engineer, you will work with IAM services on national and international level. You are going to contribute to the shaping of federated identity management, together with other IAM operators in the European landscape.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Operating and developing several AAI / IAM services
  • Performing support for user having issues
  • Prototyping extensions of the AAI
  • Attend to user requests (group management and authentication issues)
Your Profile

We are looking for a colleague who can confidently operate modern infrastructure and understands what it takes to run a highly available AAI / IAM service in production.

Required / strong fit

  • Excellent Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or comparable relevant fields
  • Relevant experience in platform operations, Site reliability engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering
  • AAI / IAM experience (e.g. OIDC, SAML, Incident management and response)
  • Programming skills (Java, Python)
  • Strong Linux skills (process/network debugging, automation, scripting)
  • Experience in user support or training

Nice to have

  • Infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD experience (e.g., Terraform/Ansible, GitOps)
  • Observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, Loki, OpenTelemetry)
  • Experience with (distributed) web service deployment, such as reverse proxies, TLS certificates, load balancing, API endpoints
  • Experience in distributed RDBMS (Galera preferred)
  • Experience operating cloud technologies and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes and its ecosystem)
  • Prior work in (or with) research computing, scientific environments, or multi-tenant platforms

How you work

  • You enjoy structured operations: measurable SLOs, calm incident response
  • You communicate clearly across disciplines and hierarchies in an international context
  • You patiently respond to user requests

You don’t need to check all the boxes to apply—we are looking for you as a person, not as a mere profile.
