Rhineland - where history meets the future

The Rhineland can look back on impressive economic development. The region was already the center of Europe's industrial revolution in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the chemical industry, automobile manufacturing and a growing service sector were added. Today, the Rhineland is one of the strongest economic regions in Germany – with an excellent infrastructure, strong companies and an international focus. The region is now showing how the transition to a modern, broad-based economy can succeed. This is where old industries and new areas such as IT, healthcare and logistics meet. Sustainable energy is also part of this. Foreign skilled workers and people looking for training will find many career opportunities here – both professionally and privately.

The labor market in the Rhineland 2025 – there are opportunities here.

In May 2025, 6.2 percent of people in Germany had no work. There are around 1.18 million vacancies nationwide. Most of these are located in western Germany – the Rhineland is one of the most important regions for employment here. Companies are looking for many well-trained employees, especially for professions with long-term future prospects.

The labor market in the Rhineland is just as diverse as its population. The region combines dynamic metropolitan areas with strong industrial centers and a flourishing SME sector. Major international corporations, innovative SMEs  and aspiring start-ups offer an enormous range of career opportunities.

The educational landscape  is excellently positioned with 64 university locations and 10 clusters of excellence and promotes innovation, competition and scientific exchange.

A robust infrastructure with airports, highways, rail networks, inland ports and a dense network of cycle paths ensures optimal accessibility and a high quality of life. But of course, also for an impressive cluster of warehousing and logistics centers belonging to renowned international companies.

The companies of the Rhineland Chemical Employers' Association, which represents over 250 companies in the chemical industry with around 80,000 employees, are also influential for the labor market. These include renowned employers such as BAYER, BASF and Henkel, which are characterized by very good working conditions, comprehensive social benefits and a wide range of further training opportunities.

Other large and attractive employers include the REWE Group in Cologne, Ford-Werke GmbH, the clinics of the city of Cologne, connecT Systemhaus AG and lise GmbH in the IT sector, Deutsche Telekom AG in Bonn, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Lanxess AG and Evonik Industries. These companies are known for their employee focus, family-friendly offerings, flexible working time models, and excellent development opportunities.

The Rhineland is also a world-class trade fair location. A special highlight: gamescom in Cologne, the largest gaming trade fair in the world. It impressively demonstrates the enormous economic potential even in sectors that were once underestimated – and how they have become powerful job engines. Have you ever been to gamescom? You have to see it to believe it. When you enter the exhibition halls in Cologne at this or other trade fairs, you will quickly realize the enthusiasm, economic potential and powerful job engine that such events represent, among other things, in a gaming industry that was initially ridiculed.

Exciting jobs can also be found at the university hospitals in Cologne and Bonn. Here, too, international applicants are specifically targeted and employment opportunities are offered in the fields of health, administration, and IT.

For those interested in training as a nursing specialist, the CJD Nursing School Wesel also offers training for foreign applicants. There is also the option of completing a 1-year training course to become a nursing assistant. The tranquil town of Wesel is well connected to the Düsseldorf metropolitan region.

The diversity of the Rhineland labor market is also reflected in the search queries of the Federal Employment Agency. We are currently looking for:

  • over 900 care workers
  • around 220 retail sales personnel
  • numerous specialists in automotive professions (mechanics, mechatronics, vehicle technology)
  • more than 300 industrial, plant and machining technicians
  • 70 warehouse and logistics specialists
  • over 150 potential company successors

And unusual job profiles are also included – from "digitization officer for carnival clubs " to "industrial mechanic with a passion for historical machines". This demonstrates the creativity and diversity of the region.
