Kassel: In the Heart of Europe, Between Culture and Industry

Kassel is known for the beautiful water features at Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, and documenta, the internationally renowned series of art exhibitions. However, Kassel is much more than just art and culture. Over many decades, a diverse industrial landscape has taken root in the Northern Hesse region. The Labor Market in Numbers

The local Federal Employment Agency reported an unemployment rate of 6.3 percent in December 2025. A look at the city and district of Kassel is particularly revealing. While the rate in the city of Kassel was 8.8 percent, it was only 4.6 percent in the Kassel district. The annual average unemployment rate for 2025 across the entire agency district was 6.4 percent, a slight increase from 6.1 percent in the previous year. This reflects a weaker economy, but not a reduced need for specialists.

In December 2025, for example, just under 3,400 job openings were registered with the local Federal Employment Agency. On average, there were approximately 3,700 job openings in 2025. In total, approximately 9,700 new jobs were reported in 2025. This trend, in turn, shows that the demand for highly qualified professionals remains high and that many companies continue to actively seek out specialists.

This regional picture is consistent with the nationwide analysis of skilled labor shortages of the Federal Employment Agency of Germany (reporting year 2024), which identified a total of 163 occupations facing labor shortages. These are occupations in which job openings remain unfilled for particularly long periods of time. The biggest labor shortages are in the nursing and healthcare professions, the construction and skilled trades sectors, and IT professions. This shortage of skilled workers also exists in the Northern Hesse region.

Trades and Construction

The need is particularly evident in the skilled trades. Companies in the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning sectors, as well as in the construction industry, are desperately seeking specialists. According to the job board of the Federal Employment Agency of Germany, there are currently over 400 job openings in the skilled trades sector in Northern Hesse. Some skilled trades businesses in the region have already begun hiring foreign specialists and are gaining experience in recognizing foreign qualifications. To provide targeted support to businesses and foreign skilled workers, the Kassel Chamber of Crafts and Skilled Trades has established the WelcomeCenter Nordhessen, which is part of a statewide network.

Health Care and Public Health Service

There is also a persistent shortage of specialists in the healthcare sector, both nationwide and regionally. Doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and therapists are needed in hospitals, nursing facilities, and doctors' offices. This trend will continue to gain momentum in light of demographic change. The largest employer in the sector in the region is Gesundheit Nordhessen Holding, which, among other things, operates the Kassel Hospital and provides care to thousands of people every day. More than 4,800 employees work there in numerous healthcare facilities. The more than 120 job openings currently advertised also offer foreign specialists opportunities to launch their careers in the region.

Industry, Technology, and Renewable Energy

The Kassel region has traditionally had strong industrial roots. K+S Aktiengesellschaft, an MDAX-listed commodities company, has been based in Kassel since 1856 and has its headquarters there. SMA Solar Technology, based in Niestetal, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of solar inverters. Engineers are often sought after here. The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) conducts research in the field of renewable energy and offers opportunities in research. EAM, an energy company based in Northern Hesse, supplies people and businesses with electricity, gas, and heat, and offers job opportunities in the fields of IT and electronics. At Airbus Helicopters in Kassel Calden, too, professionals – especially those with technical training – can find fulfilling careers.

IT and Digitalization

As is the case throughout Germany, the demand for IT specialists remains consistently high in Northern Hesse as well. Topics such as software development, IT security, and the digitization of processes are of great importance to all companies. The University of Kassel, with its engineering and computer science-related departments, as well as a growing startup scene at Sciencepark Kassel, further contribute to the demand for digital skills. The bottom line is that specialists in STEM fields have excellent career prospects in this region because their skills are in demand across a wide range of industries.
